Ashtabula Area City Schools

In the Ashtabula Area City School district, we are committed to challenging students with all ability levels.
We offer several options to enrich students who are achieving more quickly than their same age or grade
peers. The following is a short description of options that we offer.

EARLY ENTRANCE TO KINDERGARTEN: Students who turn 5 after August 1 of the current school year can
be referred by their families for an evaluation to enter Kindergarten early. This process takes into account
the child’s social emotional skills as well as age, intelligence levels, and academic skills. Generally, the
team conducts an observation at the child’s daycare or home setting and schedules a time to directly test
the child. The team then collects all of that information and meets with the parent to make a decision.

ACCELERATING A SINGLE SUBJECT: Students who are achieving well above grade level in one subject
can go to the next higher grade for that subject. Before making this decision, a team collects important
data regarding the child’s skills, meets with the parents and develops a plan to help support the child. This
can occur in all grade levels, but is particularly common in our district at the Junior High.

ACCELERATING A GRADE: Students who are achieving well above grade level in all subjects can be placed
in the next higher grade (i.e. skipping a grade). Before making this decision, the team collects data
including intelligence and academic scores, temperament, and grades. The team develops a plan to help
support a child as he or she moves to the next grade.

GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL EARLY: This allows students to graduate before their target year and
requires a team decision based on several factors. The high school guidance team should be involved
with this decision to ensure all graduation requirements are met.

JUNIOR HIGH ACCELERATION AND ENRICHED CURRICULUM: These courses are taught by teachers with
training to teach students who are gifted and include enrichment opportunities in Language Arts, Science,
Science/Technology/Engineering/Math (STEM), Algebra i for High School Credit, and Honors Physical
Science taught at the High School.

HIGH SCHOOL: High school offerings include College Credit Plus (CCP) opportunities, Advanced
Placement (AP) courses, and Honors Classes.
